Feature: Nottingham Video Game Expo 2024 - A Fun-Packed Weekend In England's "Silicon Valley"

Guest speakers, traders, indies and more.

We might be slightly biased here as we're based in the heart of England, but we often feel that this part of the country doesn't get enough credit for its amazing contribution to the world of gaming.

While many people will default to places like London, Manchester and Guilford when asked what they consider to be the UK's most significant place when it comes to video game development, the midlands is (or was) the home to the likes of Rare, Core Design, Blitz Games, Playground Games, Codemasters, Ultimate: Play the Game, Playtonic, Free Radical Design and many, many other companies – which gives us enough reason to think of it as the nation's "Silicon Valley", at least in terms of video game production.

Read the full article on timeextension.com

Feature: The Race Is On To Save A Valuable Resource Of Video Game History

We need the community's help - do you have old copies of CTW?

One of the History of Games 2024 conference talks, by Jaroslav Švelch, was on British game developer and journalist Mel Croucher. As Švelch describes it, he has become Croucher's biographer, interviewing him in his home and having access to his large archive of materials.

Croucher is perhaps best known for the games Pimania (1982), Groucho (1983), and Deus Ex Machina (1984) - the last one included an audio tape to be played alongside the game. In later years, Croucher moved into journalism and activism, writing for Crash magazine. Švelch's talk included archive photography, gameplay video, and detailed how Croucher was opposed to censorship but advocated self-regulation, was for nuclear disarmament, and, in many ways, was an outlier in the British games industry and press.

Read the full article on timeextension.com

UK Museum Builds 3D-Printed Replica Of Computer Space, The First Ever Arcade Machine

The game that launched an industry.

Computer Space holds a special place in video game history. It was the first arcade video game ever released, launching in 1971. It was also the first commercially available video game of all time and is responsible for starting Nolan Bushnell on the path to Atari, one of the most influential companies in the history of the industry.

However, despite all of this, it was not a success when it first launched. The complex gameplay (based on the 1962 computer title Spacewar!) and unusual controls put people off, and as a result, only a few units were ever produced – and that means they're incredibly expensive today.

Read the full article on timeextension.com

Here's Some Footage Of A Young Matt Berry Exploring CeX's Legendary Retro Shop

Back when the idea of retro was still pretty new...

We've laboured this point a few times in the past, but it's important to remember that UK high-street retailer CeX didn't start out as the technological swap shop it is today – in the beginning, it was primarily concerned with imported games and hardware from Japan and North America, and was one of the leading venues when it came to sourcing the latest and great gaming gear.

Before it morphed into the repository of second-hand mobile phones and DVDs that we know and love today, CeX even had its own dedicated retro store – and, it's worth pointing out, this was towards the end of the 1990s, a time when retro was only just becoming recognised as a viable commercial sector of the market.

Read the full article on timeextension.com

Feature: The Inside Story Of Games-X, The UK's First Weekly Video Game Magazine

"It was a crazy time for games... and it just never, ever stopped".

Putting together a monthly video game magazine is no mean feat. You've got pages to fill with insightful copy, print deadlines to meet and a whole host of other concerns to factor in – things which, as games media becomes ever more entrenched in the digital space, are often taken for granted by many. However, it takes a special kind of insane courage to produce a weekly video game publication – and that's exactly what happened with Games-X, the first magazine of its kind in the UK when it launched in May 1991.

Games-X was the brainchild of publisher Hugh Gollner, who, via his Gollner Publishing company, would also create the likes of Amiga Action, ST Action and Mega Drive Advanced Gaming – although he would eventually have to sell his business to Europress as it was always run as something of a loss. Games-X perhaps typifies the company's maverick approach; as Gollner tells The Out of Print Archive, "it was an ambitious magazine. It was also a big mistake – it lost a fortune!"

Read the full article on timeextension.com
