Sega's Japanese account has announced on Twitter that a new project based on its RPG series Rent-A-Hero is currently in development and scheduled for release next year.

But before you go getting too excited, it appears that the new game won't be a traditional follow-up, as many would hope. If you've been anywhere near AliExpress recently, you'll surely have noticed a proliferation of modded Saturn consoles which have had their CD drives removed and are primarily intended for use with a Saroo flash cart, which allows all titles to be loaded from the console's cartridge slot.

There's a flood of these hacked systems coming out of China these days, often with transparent cases which show off the Saturn's internals. The idea is that by using a Saroo to load games, you don't need the CD drive, effectively making it a "Saturn Mini" due to the reduction in height. Some systems even come with bolt-on LCD monitors.

SEGA Rally turns 30 this year, and to mark the occasion, Sega has teamed up with Wave Master to produce a special 30th anniversary soundtrack CD.

Update #3 : Obbe Vermeij, a former technical director at Rockstar North who notably worked on Grand Theft Auto III (among other GTA titles), yesterday acknowledged the recent fan effort to port Grand Theft Auto III to the Sega Dreamcast, calling the project "impressive".

Responding to a tweet from @falco_girgis (one of the individuals who is contributing to the fanmade port), Vermeij said, "There is an impressive effort going on to make gta3 run on the Sega Dreamcast. The first months of development of gta3 (back in 99/00) were done on the Dreamcast. For commercial reasons we switched to ps2. At the time we did think it was technically possible to pull it off on the DC and these guys are actually doing it. Nice one."

2001's SEGAGAGA is one of the most unique games on the Dreamcast. In it, the player is tasked with restoring the fortunes of an ailing Sega against its evil rival, DOGMA, a company which owns most of the console market (and is clearly inspired by Sony).

Laced with humour and packed with Sega-related references, SEGAGAGA never saw release outside of Japan – by the time it launched in March 2001, the company had already announced it was to abandon the Dreamcast in favour of becoming a third-party publisher. Any chance of a Western release was totally off the cards.

The Dreamcast is now 25 years old – it launched in Japan at the end of 1998, and recently celebrated a quarter-century since its North American release. The first home console to come with internet connectivity out of the box, Sega's final domestic gaming system will have given many players their first taste of online multiplayer – but, as you'd expect, the infrastructure which supported all of that is long gone.

Golden Axe: The Duel might not be the most acclaimed entry in Sega's long-running fantasy series, but it's still interesting to think that it has managed to keep its debug menu a secret for almost 30 years.

Prolific Saturn hacker @memory_fallen has unearthed a menu which allows you to turn blood off, show collision boxes and even display your special moves – but the most interesting aspect of this discovery is that you can play as the final boss, G. Axe (the physical embodiment of the titular Golden Axe).

A free fan game was launched on itch.io earlier this week that crosses Sega's classic shoot 'em up series Fantasy Zone with the mobile hit Flappy Bird. And unsurprisingly, it's just as addictive as the games that inspired it.

Fantasy Zone - Flappy Opa-Opa was built in just one week by the developer Icy Guidance in Stencyl — a game engine for creating PC, mobile, and web projects.
