Review: Polymega - Now With N64 Support, But Is It Still Worth A Look In 2024?

Updated with impressions of the N64 EM05 Ultra Module.

Originally announced back in 2017 as the RetroBlox, Polymega has endured a fairly tumultuous journey to market. While the system's objective has always been the same – to offer players the chance to access software for a wide range of cartridge and CD-based retro consoles in one place – we've seen a lot of changes over the past few years. FPGA support was dropped early on, something which caused a lot of consternation amongst potential buyers accustomed to the impeccable performance of Analogue's excellent Super Nt and Mega Sg, and then the system missed its proposed 'early 2019' release window.

Pre-orders opened, but the launch was pushed back again and once more at the close of 2020, and then there was the double-whammy of the Coronavirus pandemic and civil unrest in Myanmar – the Southeast Asian location where California-based Playmaji, the team behind the Polymega, has chosen to manufacture the console. As a result, the system has been hindered by crippling component shortages and frustrating delays.

Read the full article on timeextension.com

Polymega's Next Trick? Ditching Dedicated Hardware

"The system is no longer the only way to get the Polymega experience".

Polymega maker Playmaji has just revealed the most dramatic shift in the history of its retro-focused modular system: a downloadable application which will allow players to get the (almost) same experience using other devices – including computers, phones and tablets.

This app will allow Playmaji to leverage its slick UI, powerful emulators and robust game database without expecting users to shell out for expensive hardware – hardware which the company has historically struggled to get into the hands of its customers.
Polymega Production Crippled By Component Shortages

"50 units a month" is a best-case scenario, says Playmaji.

Polymega manufacturer Playmaji has admitted that the production of its all-in-one retro system has been reduced to a crawl due to lead time issues on key components.

In a statement on Twitter, the official Polymega account said: "Unfortunately we're still experiencing long lead times which is hindering the manufacture of our base units." When quizzed on the current level of production, the account replied: "These severe lead times are for any production at all. 50 units a month would actually be fantastic at this point. We're at the mercy of our manufacturer not being able to mass-produce units. We may get some very small batches in the meantime but nothing concrete."

Read the full article on timeextension.com

We've Got Some Bad News If You're Still Waiting For A Polymega

Factory lead times have increased dramatically.

Playmaji's Polymega console is, in many ways, the dream retro gaming system. It uses emulation and optional modules to replicate the performance of systems like the SNES, Mega Drive / Genesis, PlayStation and Saturn, and has a massive built-in database which allows you to 'dump' your collection, iTunes-style.

The big issue with the Polymega at present is that the machine is incredibly hard to get hold of. Following lengthy delays, it finally started shipping out to those who had pre-ordered a few years ago, but many are still waiting for their system and communication between customers and Playmaji has been inconsistent at best.

Read the full article on timeextension.com

Polymega Units Are Finally Arriving In The Hands Of Customers

Support for another console also to be announced.

Polymega – the all-in-one retro console capable of playing a wide range of cartridge and CD-based classic systems – has certainly taken its time coming to market.
After Months Of Silence, Polymega Insists Pre-Orders Are Shipping Soon

September 12th is the new launch date.

The Polymega is a remarkable system capable of running original software for consoles such as the SNES, Mega Drive, PC Engine and even Sega Saturn – but while the unit itself lives up to its potential, creator Playmaji has had something of a nightmare when it comes to actually getting it into the hands of people who pre-ordered it back in 2018.

The machine was heavily delayed and Playmaji faced an issue with North American retailer Walmart, via which many thousands of customers had placed their orders.
Polymega Release "Still On Track" Despite Production Problems

Business licence suspension also being resolved.

What a rollercoaster ride the Polymega has been. When it was first announced the excitement was palpable; here was an all-in-one solution for retro fans which would allow them to harness their existing collection of games and play them with modern creature comforts, such as save states, patches and HD output. Such an epic venture was always going to be prone to some delays, but Polymega has been pushed back more than once, with its latest (tentative) release window being February (yes, the month just gone).

The machine has missed this revised release window, with reports from Japan suggesting that production has been delayed by the ongoing civil unrest in Myanmar. NK Trading Co., Ltd., the Japanese distributor of the system, has stated that "satisfactory supply cannot be provided"; it is also citing the COVID-19 pandemic as a contributing factor. NK Trading is aiming for a shipment within the year (it's not known if this refers to the calendar year or the financial year, the latter of which ends at the start of April) but notes that it is, at present, "difficult to predict an accurate schedule." It was reported that this production delay is also believed to impact North American and European orders.

Read the full article on timeextension.com
