@KingMike
Nintendo asked EA to put their games onto the SNES because a survey found that a third of all US gamers chose their console based on what sports games were available on each console. EA's sports games were selling the Genesis more than Sonic was. Nintendo approaching EA was a game changer.

@UK_Kev The did publish some SNES games but I'm guessing they didn't do as much with Nintendo as Nintendo was a LOT more controlling in that era. Though it wasn't a whole lot, mostly sports ports, Rampart and B.O.B. are the ones I remember. Also the Strike series but the SNES ports came later.
Also, it has since been revealed in the years since, they were able to get a preferential license from Sega because EA had already cracked Sega's protection on the Genesis and was like "we don't really need a license but if you give us a good deal, we'll play along with your rules and not spoil it to everyone else". They couldn't do that with Nintendo.

By KingMike

Re: Opinion: Electronic Arts Used To Empower Developers; Now It Looks To Replace Them With AI

I guess I'm a little confused about the difference between AI and "procedural generation," which is something that has been around for decades in gaming. I guess there's still a human touch in procedural generation, whereas AI is all computer-created?

Anyway, I will echo the sentiment that I have long lost interest in the kinds of games EA releases. Probably have not bought one since the PS2/GC/Xbox generation. I feel like the NFL license was kind of the nail in the coffin. I mean, the games they make no longer interested me anyway, but that was just really anti-consumer. They were awesome back in the Genesis days though. That's for sure!

EDIT: I take that back. Alice: Madness Returns in the PS3 era was legit. And then they refused to work with American McGee on the sequel (or so the story goes). BAH!

Re: Opinion: Electronic Arts Used To Empower Developers; Now It Looks To Replace Them With AI

Electronic Arts is the company who weaseled their way into a preferential license from Sega so they could self-manufacture a version of Populous for the Genesis they knew was incompatible with a number of consoles so they stuck a warning sticker on the box.
(It's because the game lacked a Sega-mandated header which TMSS consoles checked to see if the cartridge was licensed. Something Sega fixed when they published the Japanese version.)
EA, pulling scummy moves since at least 1991.

Re: Opinion: Electronic Arts Used To Empower Developers; Now It Looks To Replace Them With AI

As someone said, it's remarkable how far removed EA is now from how it was started. But that's how corporations are. People change, and different people are making decisions there. The modern EA has a long history of not being a great place to work and for making questionable decisions. In some ways, Steam got to be so successful because of the crazy DRM methods the big publishers were pursuing. EA doesn't have a lot that particularly interests me these days, but I made a conscious choice to not buy anything of theirs again. It did come into play once. I intended to get Mass Effect 3 when it came out, but by that point I was exasperated with EA. Part of that was withholding the game from Steam to push their own distribution. I seem to recall their own platform was a bit of a mess at the time too. Who could have imagined that?(me....many others) I'll just have to live with the Mass Effect sage uncompleted for me. Such a shame because I heard the saga's ending was very satisfying(sarcasm).

By sdelfin

This fills me with existential dread. Not just this specific EA example, but the fact this reflects the entire wider world.

In 1999 the internet was fun an exciting. Today it's a wasteland filled with cheap and nasty AI art and text, selling cheap and nasty knock-off products that don't work. I find it depressing to be online.

And now games, my escape from the ills of the real world, are heading in the same way.

I don't want it. Nobody wants it. Can we not, I dunno, just not do the thing that nobody wants to do?

On the plus side, I have more retro games than I can finish in my lifetime. I just hope my CRTs outlive me.
