@Azuris well, the "problem", as I said in my initial post, is it uses a lot of processing power to calculate all that. People may not realize it because they're using it from afar and just wait a few seconds after posting their prompts, but there are remote servers that generate all that crap. If everyone starts doing it, it will be a huge problem.
Some people run AI locally, but they're still in minority.

By RootsGenoa

@AJB83 That being said I get that you were slightly triggered by me using the word 'trend'. AI is obviously here to stay, because it was already there for important stuff like medicine anyway.

And I can also see it used more and more for video games, to avoid creating worlds and characters from scratch for instance. When I'm talking about a trend, it's these silly videos that look like fever dreams. I agree they're often fascinating, but I'm pretty sure people will get tired of them eventually. For now people have fun, play with it because it opened a vast area of "what if" possibilities, but I think in the long run, people will naturally focus on using AI for something more useful, that's all.

By RootsGenoa

It does make me wonder if some sort of localised AI model will be the next big thing on the PS6/Xbox5.

Lest we forget an anticipated feature of the Switch 2 is DLSS upscaling allowing devs to build a 720p game that plays in 4K on your TV. This uses machine learning. What could they do with more power?

The Mario 64 one is awful and properly looks like an AI mess. The Shenmue one is more interesting as the game wanted realism to begin with. Imagine a tool that devs could rinse old titles through to remaster them without much effort.

By RadioHedgeFund

@RootsGenoa Awesome to hear! :)

I'm the same when it comes to Ray Tracing and 4K. I had a heat pump installed recently, I've been recycling stuff for years, etc. I'm not perfect mind you, but I had my nephew build a PC that is both power saving and totally silent, I mostly play on Switch and I have an Xbox Series S (I don't give a ***** about 4K and ray tracing).

By RootsGenoa

@RootsGenoa This is a very city-folk thing to say. Have you done much to reduce your carbon footprint? I'm legitimately interested, btw, it's not a dig!!!

I moved to the country in 2016, and now live on a small block of land in a 65sqm house running off solar and using water tanks. I've sold off my old gaming PC and almost entire retro gaming collection to go low-power digital.

I've got city-folk family that will spout this stuff, but use an incredible amount of power and water, and rely on a lot of disposable products for just one person. Tell them to cut back when they stay with you, and it's like they've been shot in the heart.

I game on a laptop and Switch, and will be replacing my laptop with an ASUS ROG Ally X next month.

I'd love to get to know you if you're like-minded that way - I don't think there's enough people out there vocal about saving power when it comes to gaming as a hobby.

Re: AI, Please Leave Our Favourite Video Games Alone

I usually intensely dislike stuff like this, but the Shenmue one is actually really impressive, in a way. Super, SUPER held back by ancient NPC animation routines, but impressive. Once the technology improves, this will become way less creepy.

The Mario 64 one can burn in hell.

Comments about AI tech being a trend will age like milk.

I'm not super about it all myself, but it's not a trend and it's not going anywhere. It'll be the norm, because humans can't help but only care about themselves and the bottom-line by cutting costs and ruin things that are awesome. See THE INTERNET.

Games crafted by humans will become boutique and expensive, just like music, music on Vinyl and analog synthesizers, because the general masses won't be able to tell/give a hoot.

It's already written, and as a collective, we've proven already exactly the way this will all play out, unfortunately.

The Shenmue one looked nice. It looks like what I'd expect from a remake/remaster.

The Mario one was trippy, kind of reminds me of when a group of artists collab on a video using different art styles.

The wooly Mario head was cute, it just needs a moustache. I thought it was interesting how it interpreted the stages differently, like the lava world being Jam, and outside Peach's Castle being sandy.

Overall I didn't hate it but it definitely needs a lot of work.

By xzacutor

AI is to art what the microwave is to food, and you will not stop people from using either unfortunately. I could not be more anti-ai, or anti microwave for that matter, but people will take easy over quality everyday.
