Guide: Gaming's Best 'Leftfield' Control Interfaces, Ranked

If it's not a pad or stick, it might be on this list...

We all love console gaming – it’s probably the reason why you’re here reading this. Like us, you've probably spent a disproportionate amount of time fiddling with controllers and accessories over the years, many of which were swiftly adopted (and many just as quickly forgotten).

The NES Zapper, the absolutely mad analogue TV aerial for the Game Gear, the near-mythical Power Glove – we could go on. But as video games have risen to become the dominant home entertainment juggernaut that they are today, it feels like some of that uniqueness has been squeezed out to make room for consistent, mainstream functionality.

Read the full article on timeextension.com

Review: RetroSix Super GamePad - The Perfect Replacement For Your Old SNES Controller

Well, that's just super.

As well built as your typical console controller is, it's inevitable that it will eventually stop working or develop a fault. When you consider that consoles like the SNES and Mega Drive / Genesis are now well over 30 years old and arguably past their expected operational lifespans, it's remarkable that their respective pads still function at all.

With that in mind, you may find yourself in a situation where your beloved (and battered) controller has finally given up the ghost, and you're in the market for a replacement. We've already experienced the brilliance of 8BitDo's replacement SNES controllers, and Retro-Bit also has a solid option on the market in the form of its Legacy16 pad. However, there's always room for more choice – especially when you consider how much affection there continues to be for Nintendo's 16-bit console – so we were keen to check out RetroSix's offering, the Super GamePad.

Read the full article on timeextension.com

'Reflex' Accessory Range Aims To Banish Input Latency Forever

Covering controllers, A/V solutions and power.

Input latency is a real bone of contention amongst gamers these days. Not every piece of gaming hardware is created equal, and the introduction of wireless control and cloud streaming means that lag and latency get a lot more attention than they used to.

The retro gaming sector is more sensitive to latency than most, largely because older games usually have some form of underlying emulation (which introduces extra frames) and the games themselves were often designed around CRT displays, which traditionally have less latency than modern flat-panel screens.

Read the full article on timeextension.com

Playdate Owners, This Is The Only Case You Need

Snuggle up.

We're big fans of the Playdate here at Time Extension, but if there's one thing we get a bit nervous over, it's taking the wee little device out and about.

It's such a delicate-looking thing, we can't help but feel intensely protective over it – and finding the right carry case hasn't been as easy as we'd like, given the unusual dimensions of the unit compared to other handhelds.

Read the full article on timeextension.com

Review: Retro-Bit 'BIG6' Sega Genesis / Mega Drive Controller - Bigger Is Better

Old-school cool.

The original Genesis / Mega Drive launched in Japan in 1988 alongside what was, for the time, a pretty revolutionary controller. Pads for the NES / Famicom, Master System and PC Engine had all followed largely the same template – an oblong-shaped controller with two action buttons.

What Sega offered with its 16-bit system was a more ergonomic experience; the MK-1650 pad was rounded so it sat more comfortably in the hands, while the two small 'prongs' at the bottom enhanced grip. Furthermore, Sega added a third action button, opening up plenty of gameplay possibilities.

Read the full article on timeextension.com

Review: Forever Pak 64 - Fixing Your N64's Ticking Time Bomb

Thanks for the memories.

Because the Nintendo 64 used cartridges as opposed to compact discs like its rivals, games were, by and large, designed to save your progress without the need for a memory card – but that didn't stop Nintendo from making one anyway.

The N64 Controller Pak (part number: NUS-004) plugged into the back of your N64 pad and allowed you to transfer data between consoles – handy for when you were visiting a friend's house and wanted to use your own data on a particular game (like taking your team with you to play in a competitive sports title, for example).

Read the full article on timeextension.com

Review: Mega Drive Mini 2 Cyber Stick - An Indulgence Few Will Get To Appreciate

The best way to play After Burner II, at least.

The fact that Sega's Genesis / Mega Drive Mini II ships with all-new versions of Space Harrier and Fantasy Zone wasn't the only pleasant surprise which accompanied the arrival of the micro-console – Sega also revealed that the machine would be accompanied by a ¥19,800 / $150 / £125 analogue flight stick controller which costs even more than the base system – and that it would be exclusive to Japan.

It's worth digging into the history of this rather unusual controller because, as random as it seems, there's a method to Sega's madness here. Initially intended for use on the Sharp X68000 series of Japanese home computers, the original 1990 Cyber Stick was manufactured by Sharp (under the name CZ-8NJ2) and Micomsoft (designated XE-1AJ, notable for its orange A, B and C buttons) and offered analogue control at a time when this was a relative novelty, at least outside of the arcades.

Read the full article on timeextension.com

Review: Retro Fighters Defender - A Wireless Wonder For PS1, PS2 And PS3

And Switch and PC, to boot...

Retro Fighters have been making waves in the video game accessory arena for a while now thanks to their ergonomic designs and great build quality. The firm has already taken on the likes of the Dreamcast and N64, and for its next trick, it's taking on the PlayStation range of systems.

The Retro Fighters Defender works on the PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS Classic, as well as the Nintendo Switch and PC. Some of those systems don't have wireless tech built-in, and for this, the Defender comes with two transmitters in the box – one for the PS1 / PS2 and the other for the PS Classic.

Read the full article on timeextension.com
